ReGen is the fabric created by Candiani Denim for its 80th anniversary. ReGen contains 50% recycled cotton and 50% TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ fibers, produced by Lenzing, and aims to minimize the water needed for its production thanks to the absence of fresh, raw cotton and the presence of innovative technologies in the dyeing process. The fabric won the ITMA Sustainable Innovation Award 2019.

ReGen is sustainable denim made with recycled cotton

Much water is needed in the jean-making process: 2,565 liters are necessary to grow cotton, 20 to produce fabric, and 70 to wash. The ReGen material was born to reduce these figures and give regenerated fibers a new life in the form of premium denim. ReGen is sustainable denim based on four pillars: materials made with recycled cotton and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ and Indigo Juice® and Kitotex® technologies used to dye and size.

Recycled cotton mixes with TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™

ReGen is made with 50% recycled cotton and 50% TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ fibers. Recycled cotton originates from Candiani Denim’s industrial waste. TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ is a cellulose fiber produced by Lenzing that combines recycled materials, such as cotton and wood leftovers from clothing production. The ReGen fabric is then characterized by the presence of regenerated threads in both the warp and the weft and the total absence of fresh, raw cotton in its entire manufacturing process. ReGen is a perfect example of pre-consumer recycling.

How to dye jeans in a more sustainable way?

Indigo Juice® and Kitotex® technologies are used to dye and size ReGen jeans in a more sustainable way. Indigo Juice® is a dyeing technology that keeps indigo very superficial on yarns. So, indigo can be washed away using 15% less water and energy and fewer chemicals. Kitotex® is technology patented by Candiani Denim and based on the employment of a biodegradable substance with anti-bacterial, anti-static, and anti-mite properties than can completely replace polyvinyl alcohol and other harmful chemicals traditionally used in the dyeing and finishing stages. Thanks to Kitotex®, the sizing process is free from microplastics and requires 50% less water and 30% less energy than the most traditional one.

ReGen needs hence 75% less water and 65% fewer chemicals than traditional denim to be manufactured and washed, reducing the environmental impact of a pair of jeans. At the same time, it saves all the water required to grow fresh, raw cotton.

ReGen won the ITMA Sustainable Innovation Award in 2019

Candiani Denim created ReGen in 2018 to celebrate its 80th anniversary. The fabric won the ITMA Sustainable Innovation Award in 2019 in the Industry Excellence Award category that awards textile and clothing manufacturers who used technological innovations to enhance industry sustainability.

ITMA is the biggest world fair of textile and clothing technologies. It has taken place every four years since 1951 to showcase the latest machinery and materials and promote partnerships and collaborations in the entire industry. ITMA aims to foster sustainability and circularity to protect the health of our planet and is committed to reducing the carbon footprint of the exhibition.
